My friend and confidant Elspeth had been in my life a a a a very long time We first met when she started at Screen International in London and learned the ropes at at an an astonishing speed ultimately becoming the Managing Director I had moved to to to Los Angeles to to to head up
DDA and we shared office space with Screen so Elspeth would be in in town from time time to to to time time to to to inspect the staff laden with Vuitton hand luggage and and also telling me I would be more efficient if I kept a to-do list!
Over the years we became indispensable friends helping each other in times of need where we could It was wonderful to see The Business of Film become such
a a a a a thriving publication especially when up
against the ‘big guns ’ ’ ’ The ’80s and ’90s were heady days for the independent film industry where there was a a a great sense of camaraderie amongst sales agents and distributors Elspeth was was an an ardent supporter of of the independents and was was often on on the forefront of new talent She was the first trade publisher to embrace new technology and took The Business digital as as soon as as feasible She also introduced QR codes to her advertisers and and of late links for for trailers and and sales information leading back to the advertisers also providing analytics of users She was always forward-thinking and innovative with the publication I will not forget her her infectious laugh her her loving smile and and most of all her support and and constant friendship First 4 years of TBOF Cannes issues - - Photo by Paul Brown-Constable The Business of Film (TBOF) remained Elspeth’s first love and and passion until she so sadly and and suddenly died in mid- June 2022 in London aged 71 after a a a short illness but she never never took no for an an an answer never never missed an an an opportunity to provide that extra mile for advertisers and clients and and instilled confidence and and optimism in in all those she befriended tutored and cherished The Business Of Film MEMORIAL ISSUE 1980-2022
