Sidse Babett Knudsen, leading Danish actress (Borgen and Westworld)
is first Patron of the CANNESERIES International Series Festival
For the last several years MIPTV has increased the number of celebrities attending the Television market, adding the ambiance of a Festival event to its screenings. With digital disruption of ‘the windows’ which have disappeared on the production and distribution fronts, the industry now refers to filmed entertainment across the spectrum of the proliferation of platforms as content. With the City of Cannes already synonymous with Festival de Cannes, it was therefore logical and an inevitable conclusion that MIPTV would collaborate with the Mayor of Cannes and introduce the first CANNESERIES International Series Festival running in tandem with MIPTV.
CANNESERIES Festival kicked off 4th April and ends with the prize giving ceremony on April 11th. The screenings at the Auditorium Lumiere of the International Series In Competition are open to everyone. Ten Series from Italy, Mexico, Israel, Belgium and the USA make up the Series showcased.
Aimed at encouraging new talent, CANNESERIES Institute is a five week long writing residency which welcomed eight international students in Cannes, from March 5 to April 11. At the end of the program, supervised by teachers from the University of Côte d’Azur (UCA) and members of Serial Eyes, a writing residence in Berlin, each resident will produce a pre-bible and the pilot of a TV series, and then will be offered the opportunity to develop it with Canal+. From April 7th to 11th the residents will also be able to participate in professional meetings organized as part of In Development, the Cannes Drama Creative Forum organized by CANNESERIES and MIPTV.
The first event of CANNESERIES is a win-win for both organizations. Adding the Festival element to MIPTV gives it a needed edge, and for the City it is a welcome and added boost to the economy of the local businesses and visitors to Cannes.
