Hugh Williams is co-Founder and Director of Cirkus TV, and is one of the speakers on the panel of the SVOD session today. He has been one of the pioneers of VOD in the UK where he was responsible for establishing the rights framework and content packaging for some of the country's leading IPTV platforms. Three years ago he co-founded Cirkus, a drama SVOD service that has already established itself strongly in Scandinavia. The DISCUSSION: Online is proving a rich playing field for factual content. While global SVOD clients stack their lineups with A-list documentaries, niche local SVODs have global ambitions with a presence in multiple countries. In this session, a diverse panel of SVOD players unveil their business and editorial strategies, share upcoming projects and discuss partnership opportunities.

In conjunction with the parameters of the above panel discussion, The Business of Film (TBOF) recommends documentary producers to peruse the in-depth study undertaken by Communications MDR on behalf of Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival (Hot Docs) which conducted audience research on the viewing habits of documentary audiences. For the purposes of the study, “documentary” refers to many types of documentaries—including documentary feature-length movies, short-film documentaries and documentaries on TV.

Hot Doc was founded in 1993. The Canadians are known for their documentaries and TBOF found it is a useful source of information for documentary filmmakers; the information in the study is a barometer of the growth of the genre.
